Ethanol / Biodiesel Update -September, 2008

Ethanol testing has remained high with corn prices staying relatively high. In addition, DDGs testing is becoming more popular as companies look to market their co-products for feed and food. The emphasis on ethanol testing continues to be on quality. All marketers and retailers want to sell a quality product. Also, many ethanol companies are turning to Midwest Laboratories with respect to their wastewater discharge sampling. With regulations continuing to be tight, this type of testing is also becoming more popular. Shipping samples  has been a concern, especially with the recent takeover of DHL  by UPS. Check with your shipper to insure prompt pickup times.

On the biodiesel side, many producers are preparing for the upcoming changes with respect to blends testing. Hopefully by October, the new ASTM regulations will be in place. Analysis for Full ASTM D 6751 can be costly.  If you are a producer just starting out, you may want to consider the Critical ASTM D 6751 test package. This test focuses on the 5 hardest tests to pass and can save producers money and time with respect to meeting ASTM Guidelines. In addition, quality feedstock can make a difference. If you have issues with your product, you may want to look at testing the feedstock to insure its quality is acceptable.  Finally, glycerin testing continues to be popular. Many companies take advantage of the Basic Glycerin Package, $210.50 to determine the quality of their co-product.
